HEAD

Shape Rainbow (2012), a film in 16 sections by 2nd-year BA Graphic Design Communication students at Chelsea College of Arts, made in response to a brief by Max Hattler in Nov/Dec 2011. "During last term, the award winning animator Max Hattler came to work with the gdc stage 2. Working in small groups the students responded to his brief to make short sequences following general instructions for their structure which, when joined together became a new, group generated animation." CCAD GDC blog, Jan 2012.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID
"Max Hattler is a moving-image artist whose work is difficult to sum up into words – his animation is abstract and the screening (may it be in a gallery space or projected onto the Regent’s Canal) of his works are always playful and innovative. He has collaborated with various visual and sound artists to create his inimitable ‘conceptual aesthetics’ which continue to win various awards and prizes during film festvials. Alongside his animation work, Max is also working towards a Professional Doctorate in Fine Art, and lectures at various art schools in London." Tatevik Sargsyan, Hunger TV, 2013 [more]

"Max Hattler surprises his audience with the gripping force of his abstracted images, combined with sounds he often composes for his own films. The German media artist and animator lives in London and has made a real leap into the media art and festival scene since he graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2005." Klaus W. Eisenlohr, Directors Lounge, 2011 [more]

"Max is a renowned, award winning artist working with animation, intallation and audio visual performances. He gave us an inspirational show of controlled and powerful abstract and political work that really challenges concepts of what animation can be. A prolific artist with a fantastic broad range of approaches." Farnham Animation: Guest Lecturers, 2013 [more]

"... his body of work is so diverse, yet his work always shows a sense of play and discovery. It is as if he is composing with light and image instead of notes on a paper."

"Die Arbeiten von Max Hattler assoziieren einen Besuch in einem
Spielzeugladen: Es herrscht ein stilistisches Chaos voller

"Award-winning experimental film-maker Max Hattler is known for his innovative, sometimes psychedelic short films. Collision, produced in 2005, is kaleidoscopic in its rotation of shapes taken from Islamic patterns, American quilts and the two countries' flags, set to the sound of machinery and exploding artillery. The result is thought-provoking without being explicit in its meaning, it probes a tense political situation without saying outright how Hattler sees it (although we can probably guess). Short of the Week said "few works so elegantly capture the tensions between America and the Islamic world" while Sci-Fi Dimensions described it as "like watching a fireworks display on acid." Both are pretty accurate. Collision went on to garner a host of awards; Marin, San Gio and Videologia Festival have all honoured it, as well as London SFF and Darklight FF. Although his projects are short, he uses his time powerfully. His animation Drift uses close-up shots of the body reflected in glowing blue light to suggest a kind of human landscape. Spin is a choreographed parade of toy soldiers set to music, prefaced with the words "When conflict becomes a spectacle, the lines between destruction and entertainment get blurred..." If he is telling a story with his cinema, it's one which exists outside of conventional narrative boundaries. Abstract patterns, images and sounds suggest ideas without dictating, but are arranged in a meaningful way. Outside of his intriguing films, Hattler has put together concert material for Basement Jaxx and music videos for his father, musician Hellmut Hattler. He currently teaches in London, but as one of Germany's most noted creatives his works provoke debate at film festivals around the world." Caitlin Leslie, Schön Magazine (issue 8), UK, 2010
