WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT COLLISION
"an ingenious visual spectacle in which the artist constructs and deconstructs, morphs and reproduces abstract patterns of American and Islamic connotations." Dr Nadia Mounajjed, LSE Middle East Centre Blog, Nov 2012

"Kind of appropriate movie after war hawk Obama's big week."
Totally Naked (7 May 2011, the week after Osama Bin Laden was officially killed by US Navy SEALs)

"In light of recent news of the world the film remains relevant. And beautiful."
Bradford Shellhammer, Sundance Channel, 12 May 2011

Cinema sperimentale, Nov 2013

"a pulsating mash-up of stars and stripes and Islamic patterns."
Art Monthly, Nov 2007

"Explores Politics Through Shapes."
Sheerly Avni, Open Culture, 2011

Max Hattler in MDR Thüringen Journal: 'Backup Festival Weimar: Kurz und intensiv', 13 May 2012

"Short Film of the Day: Collision. Why Watch? Sometimes it's important to forget about actors or a narrative and just go with some incredible visuals that happen to have an underlying socio-political subtext. Say what? Exactly. It's abstract that's actually watchable with symbols that don't pull punches. Your childhood kaleidoscope meets American quilting and Islamic religious icons with explosive consequences. What Will It Cost? Just 2 minutes of your time. Does it get better any better than that? Check out Collision for yourself."
Cole Abaius, Film School Rejects, 2011

"Max Hattler puts America and Islam in the blender. Beautiful smoothie." Fanfarlo, 2011

"Max Hattler creates kaleidoscopic animations which are more than mere visual titillations; in Collision he takes Islamic patterns and American quilts and morphs them, with interesting results." KINO 10, 2011

"絕佳萬花向圖案設計動畫影片,保證精彩!真是充滿想像力!喜歡這支影片" Yufu Lin, Taiwan, 2011

"Max Hattler, un artista audiovisual que persigue nuevos horizontes de expresión en movimiento, es el autor de estas fascinante pieza. 'Collision' es un interesante clip, de crítica política, en la que los patrones de estética islámica confluyen con la cromaticidad de la bandera americana. Un combinación de elementos geométricos y sonoros que contextualiza una historia narrada desde otra perspectiva." 0 Por Ciento, 2011

tank.tv interviewed Max Hattler in 2007, after Collision was included on their first DVD, 'Fresh Moves: New Moving Images from the UK'.

"... Change comes through action. If we look to visual culture then it is posters and placards which give visual presence to protesting voices in the public domain (even if they can't change things in themselves). Art, like film, mediates the (violent) world, extracting its fragments and splicing them back together as meta-comment; reflection, for the long run. We can see this quite well in Collision, a short animation by Max Hattler. Here, Islamic patterns and American quilts, the vernacular of two different cultures, kaleidoscope into the geometry of flags to the rhythm of artillery fire, fireworks and the muezzin's call to prayer. Although the film draws on the everyday, and is downloaded back into it via the personal desktop, it doesn't become dissipated by 'use'. ..." Monika Parrinder & Colin Davies, Limited Language: rewriting design - responding to a feedback culture (Birkhauser), 2009

"To note the five long years that the Iraq campaign has chalked up this month, what better way to mark the occasion than with Max Hattler's protean, prize-laden and thought-provoking animated artwork. This abstract reflection on the clash of cultures forcibly merges American quilts and Islamic patterns into beautiful, yet unsettling kaleidoscopic scenes. Make sure to launch this in the stand-alone player option and listen with headphones on, to see how Christopher Wilson's subtly ominous sound mix transforms these whirling, warring images, as a muezzin's call and the crack of artillery fire fracture Hattler's primary- coloured mandalas like shrapnel." guardian.co.uk, 2008

"Collision by Max Hattler is a joyful mash-up of Islamic patterns, American quilts, kaleidoscopic op-art that adds up to a fresh, Sesame Street quality." Adam Lee Davies, Little White Lies

"Collision deploys a deft arsenal of shapes on paths, stars-and-kaleidoscope-striping geometry, with textures and forms culled from the ensigns of Americana and Islamism ... The sound design is slick and significant, and this crackle-crisp sound imbues extrasensory depth, while punctuating the graphic ... true innovation ... great work" DINCA.org

"Few works so elegantly capture the tensions between America and the Islamic world as Max Hattler’s Collision." shortoftheweek.com

"Collision is no different than a feature film like Babel, only speaks a different filmic language in expressing the same ideas." Rick’s Flicks Picks
